BR ACUPUNCTURE - WHO AND WFAS

2008-5-22 Rouberdo, Director of Brazil President office meets Zhang Xiaorui, coordinator of WHO Traditional Medicine, fundamental medicine and medicine policy department and Deng Liangyue, the President of WFAS, who are attend the first Brazil traditional medicine and alternative medicine international seminar held by Brazil Health Ministry. Rouberdo, at the present of Lora, the president of Brazil, express the warm welcome and best regard to visitors.

Dr. Zhang Xiaorui highly praising the united medical system of Brazil, and thinks that it plays an important role in citizen health and treatment. Meanwhile, Brazil attaches importance to absorbing traditional and alternative medicine into the national health care system, and relevant laws was passed in 2006.

Zhang Xiaorui says that the traditional medicine and alternative medicine therapy, such as herbal therapy, homoeopathy, manipulation, has accepted wildly all over the world; not only developing countries, but also in developed countries. For example, 80% of the people are enjoying the relevant therapy.

Currently, application of traditional medicine and alternative medicine therapy is increasing. But according to investigation of WHO and governments, following issues are existing in lots of countries: lack of relevant data and research documents; lack of management system; problem on quality monitor and control such as exceed of heavy metal, etc; misunderstanding of public to traditional medicine and alternative medicine; lack of reliable supplier of acupuncture and herb.

Though it is influenced by unacceptable or contrast ideas of west medical doctor, herb and acupuncture therapy, with the support and help of WGO, has been accepted in more and more countries. Countries like France, Germany, and Norway has legislated for absorbing traditional and alternative medicine into national health care system. According the regulation which was passed by Norway government in 2003, both doctor who accept traditional medicine training or graduated at medical college, have access to traditional and alternative medicine after pass the examination on acupuncture and TCM and reach the basic level.

Professor Deng expresses the acknowledgement to Joubert for his greeting message to 20th anniversary of WFAS in October, 2007, which was a enormous support to WFAS and even acupuncturists all over the world. Prof. Deng says alternative medicine has been attended and applicated in more and more countries. Easy-obtained, inexpensive, and effective, acupuncture is an effective way to bring about everyone in the world enjoys medical care—the objective of WHO, and handle the problem of high price of treatment. In some countries, acupuncture has been absorbed into the mainstream medical system and along with modern medicine, bear the burden of citizen medical care service.

The discussion on who should do work about acupuncture lasts during the two decades since WFAS was founded. As president of WFAS, Prof. Deng has visits lots of countries, and discuss about the issue with both acupuncture and western medicine doctor there. He says that in his opinion, the key to the issue is standardization of education and management. At present, traditional medicine education has been pulled into regular universities, unfold formal school record and continuous education, and accept TCM and acupuncture as course in university training. Along the implement, presented by WHO, concrete regulation and requirement to school record and continuous education has been developed.

For becoming a qualified acupuncture doctor, both western and non-western doctor ought to systematically study acupuncture theory and secure operation regulation; because theory system and secure operation regulation of acupuncture is unique and special. After hearing two specialists’ introduction, Rouberdo says that TCM and acupuncture is welcomed by in from president to common people Brazil. Many people in Brasilia enjoyed excellent and effective acupuncture therapy of Dr. Gu Huhang. TCM and acupuncture is recommended and supported by WHO, therefore we will seriously research the experience of acupuncture development in other countries to do everything as we can to advance the development and legalization of TCM and acupuncture.
