Regional Strategy for Traditional Medicine
in the Western Pacific 2011-2020
In October 2011, the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific
endorsed a Regional Strategy for Traditional Medicine in the Western
Pacific 2011-2020 to guide countries and areas, WHO, development
partners and other stakeholders on how to maximize the health potential
of traditional medicine, and advance the cause of primary health care
and universal access to health services for the people of the Region.
The regional strategy has identified strategic directions and actions,
which provide general principles and guidance for countries and areas to
use in responding to the challenges which they may face with
consideration of the unique situation in each country and area.
The five key Strategic Objectives were identified for the period 2011-2020:
- to include traditional medicine in the national health system;
- to promote safe and effective use of traditional medicine;
- to increase access to safe and effective traditional medicine;
- to promote protection and sustainable use of traditional medicine resources; and
- to strengthen cooperation in generating and sharing traditional medicine knowledge and skills.
