Institutionalise traditional medical
system in state
23rd September 2013
The gathering of the traditional medical practitioners, organised by
the Akhila Kerala Parambarya Vaidya Federation (AKPVF) in Ernakulam on
Sunday, has decided to intensify the fight to formally institutionalise
the traditional medical system in the state.
AKPVF state general secretary K V Shaji Vaidhyar said that the convention discussed and analysed several issues faced by the traditional medical practitioners.
“The organisation will fight the forces that are trying to sideline this branch of medicine and traditional knowledge system,” AKPVF office-bearers said.
The convention demanded certain immediate actions from the part of the government. “This include immediate sanctioning of practicing license to traditional medical practitioners who had applied for the same, providing pension for those practitioners who crossed 60 years of age, providing reservation for the children of traditional medical practitioners in ayurveda colleges, taking survey of the traditional practitioners through village offices, establishing a medical council for traditional practitioners and ensure the right for traditional medical practice,” Shaji said.
He said that certain vested interests are trying to sabotage all the proactive measures being taken for the welfare of the traditional practitioners.
“As of now, we are working outside the parameters of institutional regulation. After consistent struggle we got a favourable order from the honourable High Court of Kerala in 2005. The court in its order said that the government of Kerala has the right to issue practicing license to traditional medical practitioners invoking section 38 of the Travancore Kochin Medical Practitioners Bill, 1953. But certain Ayurveda doctors obtained a legal stay for the order. As of now the case is pending,”, he added.
