UNESCO REPORT OF THE IBC ON TRADITIONAL MEDICINE SYSTEMS AND THEIR ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS

Basic issues 

Fair assessment of benefit and harm (Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights,
Article 4), adequate information for the person concerned in order to respect the principles of
autonomy and prior, free and informed consent (Articles 5 and 6), access to quality health care and
essential medicines (Article 14) and sharing of benefits (Article 15) are all instrumental in
promoting the right of every human being to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health. They
are the cornerstone of any practice that professes to be medicine.
