According to the WHO, the fatality rate of the Nipah virus can reach up to 75%.
Nipah virus infection in humans causes a variety of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory infection and encephalitis which in severe cases can progress to coma within 24 to 48 hours.
Approximately 20% of patients are left with residual neurological consequences, such as seizure disorder and personality changes.
There is no treatment or vaccine available for people or animals.
