69th SESSION OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE OF WHO FOR THE AMERICA

POLICY ON ETHNICITY AND HEALTH

Recognition of ancestral knowledge
and traditional and complementary medicine

19. As  a  prerequisite  for   knowledge  dialogue  it  is  necessary  to  foster  a  newappreciation of traditional knowledge, practices, and cultural expressions, and to promotethese through each culture’s own transmission mechanisms. This should be taken intoaccountnot  only  in  relation  to  care  in  sickness  but  also  for  health  promotion  andappropriate care at death.

 20. Harnessing  the  potential  contribution  of  traditional  and  complementary  medicineto  health,  wellness,  and  people-centered  health  care  is  one  of  the  goals  of  the  WHOTraditional  Medicine  Strategy  2014-2023(27).

Recognition  of  ancestral  knowledge  isessential for tapping the potential of traditional medicine to contribute to universal accessto  health  and  universal  health  coverage,  including  the  linkageor  integration  of  theseservices  in  national  health  systems  and  the  adoption  of  self-care  interventions  with  anintercultural approach.
